Today February 14th the Flyer's have acquired the services of Kris Versteeg. In return the Toronto Maple leafs get a 1st and 3rd round draft picks in the 2011 draft. This is in my eyes a small price to pay for a player of his caliber. This year's draft is going to be a weak draft to begin with.
Versteeg has 14 goals, 21 assists for 35 points with a +/- -13 this year in 53 games. Don't let the -13 throw you off, he has been with the absolutely terrible Leafs. In his career he has 58 goals, 78 assists for 138 points in 223 games in his short career. He also has 10 goals and 16 assists in 39 playoff games.
Given the fact that the Flyer's didn't have to give up any of there young talent like JVR or Ville Leino it is truly a great move for the team. They didn't break up there team chemistry like it would if they brought in a guy like Thomas Vokoun, and with salary's like Zherdev coming off next season I feel they will definitely sign Leino.
With Versteeg being only 25 years old he should be a very worthy addition to the young nucleus that the Flyers do possess which includes the likes of Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Claude Giroux and Sergei Bobrovsky. Other players that may no longer be in town next year are Dan Carcillo, and Sean O'Donnell. With the Flyer's already being young i feel that a year without a first round pick in a very weak draft is not really a big deal.
